Susie Atvell from Kindred Fare
Welcome to Lost + Found, a series of short, standardized Q+A interviews with people involved in the Finger Lakes community. We recently met with Susie Atvell, owner of Kindred Fare, to find out some of her favorite things about the Finger Lakes.
Tell us a little about what Kindred Fare is up to this spring. Any news or updates you would like to share?
Yes, we are doing our first Sunday Brunch this spring for Mothers Day. We have a nice spread of dishes we are going to feature, along with our regular menu. I think it will be a lot of fun, and it’s something we might want to do more of in the future. Mothers Day will be the first test to see how it goes. I’m excited about the menu and you can find it on our website at kindredfare.com.
What other food or local eatery are you enjoying at the moment?
We are really into this place called Thai By Night, located in Canandaigua. I love the owners and the simple menu they execute. It’s just a fun place to go eat. They take a minimal approach and offer an all Finger Lakes beverage list. “Thai Tuesday”—that’s what we call it—or “Thai Thursday”. We try to get there once a week.
Do you have a favorite local beverage?
Through this project, I have become a fan of cold-climate wines, specifically those from the Finger Lakes. I enjoy many different varieties. I’m usually drinking the ones we offer by the glass, and I’ll have one at the end of the night. Right now, I’m into the 2017 Rosé Blend from Anthony Road Wine Company. It’s served from a keg and it’s currently on our draught list, which rotates regulary.
What is your favorite outdoor activity to do around the Finger Lakes?
My favorite place to be is on the lake, either in a small boat, paddle board, or kayak. It’s an easy way to cool off in the summertime.
What is one of the best kept secrets in the Finger Lakes?
I think the best kept secret is the drive along Canandaigua Lake, from Canadaugua down to Naples. Whether you go in the winter or in the summer, it’s a beautiful drive. The perfect trip would be to take in all the beauty and then maybe eat in Naples at Roots Café. For me, it’s nice to take some time, leave the cell phone at home and enjoy the view. It’s beautiful! There used to be an old phone booth when you get down to the end of the lake. It didn’t work, it was just hanging out. I wonder if it’s still there.
